In this blog you will find helpful tips from our good friend Kayla, who is a baggage handler at United. She shares her insider knowledge with IVY & our community to help your luggage & personal items arrive at your destination safely.

  1. Tips for packing
    1. Every liquid in a bag, whether it's in a carry on or checked!
      1. Use larger/2 gallon bags if needed
    2. If you’re tight on space, roll your clothes, but be aware of the bag weight. The up-charges on overweight bags is ridiculous.
    3. Remember that strollers, wheelchairs, and any type of thing that helps with transportation is free to check, so if those things make your life easier, bring them!
2. Common errors
    1. Leaving the airport with a damaged bag instead bring it straight to baggage services. If you leave the airport, it is not likely that you will get reimbursed for damaged luggage. However, if you don’t have time that day then take pictures that day and bring it back within 7 days.
    2. Overpacking. Weigh bag before going to the airport! You can pay up to $200 for a bag that is overweight. OR there are these cool bag weigh handles you can purchase and bring with you so that you’ll never be caught off guard! Purchase Scale Here.
    3. It’s better not to use Saran wrap on your bag. Yes it keeps everything together but it is very hard for employees to slide bags and stack them. Employees seem to be more rough with the bag then.

3. Plan for the worst
    1. Put an air tag in your bag to be able to track it if it gets lost. This is an easy and cost efficient way to track luggage. Purchase Airtag Here
    2. Purchase a suitcase cover - if your bag breaks during transport, this will help hold everything in! (Zippers break all the time)
    3. Take a picture of your luggage in case it gets lost.
Other travel tips!
  1. Take a flight that is early in the morning or late at night has more chances to be upgraded to first class and a better chance of no one sitting next to you. Also lines for security are generally a lot shorter.
  2. If parking at the airport, always take a picture of where you parked your car.
  3. Always download the app for the airline you are traveling with and check in online. This will safe you SO much time.
  4. TSA Pre-check or Clear ARE WORTH IT.
  5. When going to the airport, consider security when choosing your outfit. How easy/difficult will it be to get through without the little machine beeping. That's the one I always ask myself.
  6. Dress in layers. You never know what the temperature on the plane is going to be!

We hope this blog helped you and if it did, feel free to share or leave a comment! Stay safe out there and happy travels!

Thursday morning my sister asked if I wanted to fly to Paris the next day. Needless to say, I am powerless against my never ending wanderlust and intense desire to chase #theendlessadventure. Less than 24 hours later we were boarding a flight.
